After taking a few years off from riding in the annual 100 mile Century for the Cure, I am proud to say that I’ll be participating once again. Although this year I have to be very honest, and say that I will be riding with a heavier heart.
This is why I ride…
In 2010, I began participating in this incredible 100 mile long bike ride to help raise money for the The Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. As you may or may not know, my wife was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2002. She was treated and cared for by an incredible team of doctors, nurses and social workers lead by Dr. Roger Strair at The Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and she has been in remission ever since. In 2010/2011, I had the great honor of riding along side Dr. Strair and meeting many of the wonderful people who he works with. It was a life changing experience to say the very least and I will be forever indebted to all them.
During the summer of 2015 my mother-in-law was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It is difficult to rehash this story, but again, my wife and her family found themselves returning to the Cancer Institute and Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where Susan would undergo months of pain-staking chemo therapy and surgeries. Needless to say 2015 and 2016 will be years that my wife and our family will never forget.
It is with an extremely heavy, painful and saddened heart to say that we recently lost my mother-in-law to pancreatic cancer. I will be riding this year and dedicating every single mile to my wife and her mother, Susan, two incredible women who fought cancer. In addition, I also want to dedicate the ride to the incredible team of doctors, nurses and staff at both the Cancer Institute and RWJ, who became a second family to us. Their compassion, support and love made each and every day a little bit easier to deal with in the face of this horrible disease.
I am pedaling towards a cure for cancer in the 12th Annual Century for the Cure. I will be training hard for a cause that I believe in, and would appreciate your support to help me reach, and even surpass my fundraising goal. Funds raised go directly to cancer research at The Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and with your support, they will continue to strive to find life saving therapies.
Thank you for you support.
